The Stones Cry Out

The Stones Cry Out – Voices of the Palestinian Christians, a film by Yasmine Perni is now viewable on Vimeo.

“The voices of Palestinian Christians have all too often been drowned out in the turmoil of events. This is their story, in their voices, from the Nakba of 1948 until today.”

“More than 10 years ago, I moved to Jerusalem. The move changed my life. I was not prepared for what living under occupation really means. I could not see and not tell. My conscience forced me to record and show not only what I saw, but also the stories of displacement and loss, of death and destruction. I talked to the people who were children in 1948 and remembered.

My choice to focus on the Palestinian Christians came from seeing Bethlehem imprisoned, surrounded by high walls. The romantic little town of Bethlehem that we sign about for Christmas and will soon be singing about again, was not romantic, it was and still continues to be choked, strangled and suffocated by the Israeli occupation, by the wall, by the restrictions of movement for all its people.

Still today more and more land is stolen, silently, because the world is deaf to the voices of the Palestinian people. The town is becoming smaller, the children of Bethlehem don’t have space to grow. But that is the plan, isn’t it? I cried for Bethlehem and then I got to work.

I’m not a professional filmmaker, it took me years to finish the film. And when it was finished I was invited to many countries, from the USA to the UK, to Finland and Norway, Egypt and even Malaysia, to show the documentary. I hope you find the film useful to understanding the ongoing struggle for a little piece of land called Palestine and the people who have lived there for thousands of years.”
